Church st. Martin in Martinček
Tresures of LIPTOV
Church of st. Martin is one of the oldest monuments of Liptov.
Painting from the 13th century was found in the church interior and it is one of the oldest continually preserved wall paintings in Slovakia. The church was built around 1260 in a dominant position on the hill of the eastern slope of the Monk. Originally it served as a parish church for the villages Likavka and Lisková, the village of Martinček was founded after the church was built. It was built in the style of transitional Romanesque-Gothic style, with a predominance of early Gothic style elements. Rare paintings were discovered in a restoration survey in 1999. During the years 2000-2002, wall paintings were gradually uncovered and restored throughout the church's interior. The cycle of paintings in the presbytery is one of the best preserved in Slovakia and probably the oldest of its kind in the Liptov region.
The original windows of the tower are rarely preserved. The upper part bears the features of Romanesque style and in the lower part of the Early Gothic. Despite various adjustments in the following centuries, the architecture of the building has retained its original form, and this is what remains its attraction and uniqueness to this day. The author of the wall paintings is unknown, but probably these frescoes were created around 1300.
According to the legends and theories of older historians, the church built the Templars who were to have their monastery at the nearby Mount of Monks. However, modern historiography rejects the presence of the Templars in Martinček.
On the hill just below the church, you can see about 30 wooden roofs, which the residents built to store potatoes and vegetables and are still used today.
